BODYLANGUAGE FOUNDATION
The Stichting Lichaamstaal (Body Language Foundation) is a non-profit consumers’ organisation established in 1980. It’s purpose has always been to distribute information on woman-friendly and baby-friendly birth methods and information on contact with babies and young children widely among parents and professionals, and to make this information easily accessible to them. Video is the means par excellence for this purpose. Video images can convey information directly. They tend to stick in people’s minds longer than words, and they come close to real experiences.
The Body Language Foundation makes its own videoproductions in co-operation with midwives, maternity care and home care organisations, gynaecologists, and paediatricians and it distributes these videos through its multimedia centre, open information meetings, film festivals for parents, and symposia for professionals.
Our intention is to make people aware by giving them information. The video images show that giving birth is a natural process, of which the successive stages of increasing dilation, pushing the baby out, the first contact, and the first breast-feed –all influenced by the same hormones- melt into one another. It is important not to disturb this natural process and to let the parents direct this process themselves. This will certainly compensate any unnecessary medicalization in such emotional delicate situations.
